Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a group of findings and symptoms that includes:
- Polycystic morphology of the ovaries on ultrasound
- Pathological hormonal profile characterized by an increase in androgens
- Rare periods or amenorrhea
- Increased hair growth
The pathogenesis of the syndrome is not clear. However, they often appear to be due to hereditary factors.
Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome need to be treated by a team of specialists as they often develop other metabolic diseases such as Diabetes (metabolic syndrome). They also have an increased risk of precancerous lesions and endometrial cancer.
